These are exquisitely crafted frames with finely worked detailing on both the bridge and temples. The brand Esta made in the USA by Triangle Optical Company of Pittsburgh, PA, probably in the 1920s. The bridges come with nose pads made of either bone or shell. The bridges are available in three sizes, 18mm, 22mm or 24mm. Only available with cable temples (as shown).Bridges and temples are made of 1/10 12k yellow gold or white gold fill; this means that 4.5% of the frame is made of pure gold. Because standards for gold fill were much more stringent in the old days, these frames contain more than ten times the amount of pure gold as gold fill frames made today. For example, the gold fill frames in the eyeglasses.com round collection have less than 1/100 14k gold, with one micron of 22k gold electroplate. Many frames use this thin 22k gold electroplating to enhance the color, but the layer is so thin that it can wear away leaving a mottled look as the gold underneath the layer is revealed with its different pigmentation. Photographed in fashion magazines, these Alain Mikli eyeglass frames were seen all around the world.The black plastic rectangle has two layers of shiny black plastic sandwiching a third layer of black and white. The blue frame holds a milky way of stars amidst layers of deep blue hues. The teal frame front is black in back with MikliÂ’s interpretation of tortoise used in the temples. Photographed in fashion magaines, these glasses were seen all around the world. For hardworking mornings and late nights out, they came to the fore as highly graphic objects; their development called for the work of a couturier, involving drawings, adjustments and fittings. A number of designers and couturiers came to him for their ranges of glasses. Disregarding both the fashionable and the unfashionable, Alain Mikli stands his ground; these are no longer the invisible glasses of the 1990s. He reaffirms glasses as the essential complement to the personality, adorning the facial expression, and talks about feeling a frame.My creation has become more fluid. I explain feelings to the people in my workshops, I give them tactile data, is how Alain Mikli puts it nowadays; he feels that glasses are primarily a form of self-affirmation. Now the mastery of his craft adds a new dimension - ergonomics - to these formal convictions. The gradual curve of the temples, the outward bend of their ends and the smoothly rounded curves at the ear reflect this intimate relationship with the face. What is making me progress, Alain Mikli adds, is technology. Now I can take my ideas through to their conclusion, with a perfect balance between the side-pieces, the front, and the sides. Hollowed out, curved, shaped, polished like a pebble, with an inward slope, facetted and fin-shaped, the side-pieces become tactile objects -sculptures, even - in his eye and in his hand.TECHNICAL INFORMATIONTemple Design [plastic frames]: The refinement and creation is up to the end of the temples. Shaped, polished, worked on, sometimes aggressive, sometimes sensual, round, always different, the temples become a very tactile object which we want to touch to really feel and appreciate its texture and work.
